Carrie & John’s Wedding Day, Real Wedding with Knots ‘N Such, Raleigh Wedding Planner & Florist

Carrie & John’s wedding day, from ceremony to reception, was filled with beautiful blooms and fantastic details.  Knots ‘N Such, Raleigh Wedding Planner & Florist, had the honor to provide planning, coordination, event, and floral design for their wedding day.  The ceremony was held in an immaculate cathedral at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church. After the ceremony, the reception was held at the lovely Oaks at Salem.  We loved developing and bringing Carrie’s vision of soft color palettes and clean, contemporary design to reality.  Their big day also was published on Weddings Magazine, our favorite NC wedding publication!

Choosing A Wedding Invitation Suite, Tips from Knots ‘N Such, Raleigh Wedding Planner and Florist

If you said yes to the above items, it’s time to start thinking about your wedding invitation suite.  This will be your guests’ first peek into your wedding day, setting the style, colors, and theme for your big day.  Follow along in today’s blog as Knots ‘N Such, Raleigh Wedding Planner and Florist, gives some helpful tips in picking out your perfect wedding invitation suite.

  • Choose a Wedding Style and Color Scheme
    • Choosing this early will help you craft your invitation suite. You want your motif to shine through in every choices, even the paper products! The invitation is important for letting your guests to know date, time, and location, but also for setting the formality and vision of your wedding.
  • Choose Elements that let your Personality Shine
    • There is room to be creative and let those personal touches shine through.  Maybe you love the feel of letterpress on a heavy paper. Or maybe you love printing on acrylic or metal. Or maybe you like odd shapes and sizes. Let the invites communicate your motif and your personality.
  • Choose Prudently within your Budget
    • As a planner, one of my responsibilities is to keep your budget in check. I work in “wiggle room” so you can splurge in a few areas, but not all. So look at the overall picture and decide if invitations are one of those areas that’s a priority for you. Knowing what you’re able and willing to spend will be a big determining factor in what suite you can choose.
  • Choose Wording Wisely
    • Make sure the wording is clear and easy to understand. Font plays into this as well, so choose something legible. Make sure your guests are able to answer your requests via the invites –  RSVP deadline, meal choices, or song requests.  Also, consider having multiple parts to the invitation, since too much information on one page can cause confusion.
  • Choose with a Time Frame in Mind
    • Your invitations will take time to prepare. Your guests need time to plan to attend. Factor these into determining when you need to finalize your suite. Save-the-dates need to be mailed by 6-7 months pre-wedding and invitations need to be mailed by 7-8 weeks pre-wedding.
  • Choose a Cohesive Style
    • As mentioned already, it’s important to have multiple items in your wedding paper suite. Some things to consider include: Save the Dates, Invitations, RSVP cards, Menus, Programs, Thank You Notes, Signage, Etc.  A designer can help create a suite that utilizes a similar theme, even if the design varies from element to element.  Creating a cohesive suite from the beginning can be a time and cost saving touch.
  • Choose a Proofreader
    • Before you have all the invites printed and ready to be sent out.  Choose a person you trust to proofread the writing for correct spellings, information, and legibility.  Having someone with fresh eyes will be super helpful. Your paper designer can even make mistakes, so be sure to do this!

Planning a Destination Wedding, Tips by Knots ‘N Such, Raleigh Wedding Planner and Florist

Summer has been in high gear lately, and if you are like me a bit of wanderlust may have set in.  You might have a desire to visit the cool, fresh air of the mountains Or catch some rays at the beach.  Whether flying to an international destination or sailing the high seas in America, summer definitely is a jet setting time.  Today on the blog, Knots ‘N Such, Raleigh Wedding Planner and Florist, is bringing you tips if jet setting is a part of your wedding plans.  Many people dream of an intimate wedding on the beach or at a European hot spot, but don’t know quite where to begin.  Here are 5 tips that will definitely be helpful to you in getting started!

  • Plan a location that is meaningful to you as a couple
    • First and foremost, this is your wedding.  Choose something that is meaningful to who you are as a couple for that personal touch. How about the location of your first vacation together, or the spot where he proposed, or a place that’s been on both your bucket lists for years. Make it memorable and possibly a place that you will visit again in the future. For me, that spot was in the area where I grew up and the spot where my husband fell in love with that area – the mountains of Virginia.
  • Plan well in advance
    • Unless you’re planning to elope alone as a couple, you don’t want a destination wedding and all its details to be a last minute affair.  It’s best to keep the guest list intimate and recognize the planning that will go in on their end as well.  Like in the previous mention, choose something that is personal, but make sure lodging and travel are relatively easy for your guests.  Also consider the weather – is it hurricane season?  blizzard conditions?  We can’t predict the weather, but we can make educated decisions based on the likelihood of these things.
  • Plan around your setting to help save your budget
    • You are probably not going to be able to travel with each and every knickknack you want to include in your wedding and are going to need to rely on local vendors.  That being said, when planning decorations and other parts of the ceremony, let the local decor shine through.  If at the beach, let the ocean and local blooms be a backdrop.  In Italy, incorporate olive branches and grapes.  Keep it simple, so you can enjoy the trip as well.
  • Plan for a wedding planner in your budget
    • Hire a pro to help be an intermediary between you and your destination vendors. Let them help you with your budget and with incorporating personal and site inspired ideas into your ceremony and reception.  You might hire a local planner here or one that is in your destination area who knows the ins and outs of the market there. If hiring locally here, plan to have her/him travel with you to provide the necessary coordination services. It’s customary to cover her expenses in this scenario in addition to the standard fee. It will be so helpful for you to have an expert in your corner on the trip.
  • Plan your travel and pack wisely
    • You’re probably going to want to make a quick visit before the wedding, a few days ahead of your guests.  This will be helpful in eliminating surprises.  You are going to have some last minute decisions to make and want to make sure everything is set for the big day.  This will also allow for some rest and relaxation too.  Plan wisely when it comes to packing as well.  Baggage fees can be quite hefty these days.  So like we said earlier, let the local vendors be in charge of decor.  Think also about how you will be dressed the day of your wedding.  Does the dress travel well?  Will it work in the climate where you’re visiting?  Talk at length with your wedding planner to be sure all scenarios have been carefully thought through.

I know this seems like a lot of planning and you might be thinking “I just want to get away!”  Destination weddings have different aspects to consider in the planning process, but with the right approach, it can leave you with some beautiful and meaningful memories. Maria & Mario’s Wedding Day, Real Wedding with Knots ‘N Such, Raleigh Wedding Planner and Florist

You know I love a good challenge!  When Maria came to me to design floral arrangements for her wedding, I was stumped by her color palette. She’d fallen in love with a blush & blue bridesmaid dress, but she also wanted bright colors like oranges and reds to reflect her & Mario’s cultural heritage. I tried to wrap my mind around blending those colors together, and it took me a minute to come up with the perfect combination. And when I look back at these photos, I realized that we created something amazing. I mixed blush with pale blue to match the dresses and added in corals and oranges to get that pop of color she wanted. Maria and Mario are a beautiful couple, and their wedding day reflected their amazing personalities.  From the venue to the bridal party to the ceremony to the reception, it was a gorgeous day, and I was honored to help bring their vision to life.  Knots ‘N Such, Raleigh Wedding Planner and Florist, also wants to thank some vendors who we worked alongside at Maria and Mario’s wedding day celebration:

Finding a Wedding Photographer, tips from Knots ‘N Such, Raleigh Wedding Planner and Florist

Beyond a wedding planner, a wedding photographer should be one of the first vendors you secure for your wedding day.  Think about it: at the end of the day, a great photographer is going to capture images that will stand the test of time and capture memories from your beautiful day.  If you spend time on Wedding Wire or other sites that list photographers, you will find the list to be expansive and maybe overwhelming.  Knots ‘N Such, Raleigh Wedding Planner and Florist, is here to help with 4 things to consider when trying to decide on your wedding photographer.

  1. The Photographer’s Style and Vision
    • In the digital world, most photographers have websites.  I strongly suggest spending time on a photographer’s website and search their galleries/portfolios.  Just like you have a theme and vision for your wedding day, you want to find a photographer whose eye matches your theme and vision.  You want them to tell your story and capture your personality.  This is also a great time to analyze the photographer’s background like how long they have been shooting weddings and have they worked with your particular venue before.
  2. The Photographer’s Availability
    • Another vital component of choosing a photographer is their availability of your wedding date.  You want to make sure that the photographer that you desire to capture your wedding is not already booked for your specific date.  Some photographers work for companies, so also making sure that when you are securing them to shoot your wedding, they are the specific photographer that will be there.  If not, making sure to meet with the actual photographer before signing a contract would be helpful.
  3. The Photographer’s Investment and Packages
    • Photographers are a vital investment in your wedding day.  Spending time comparing photographer’s style and vision should be coupled with spending time comparing investments and packages will be helpful in narrowing down your list.  What is included in their base package?  What add ons can be included?  How many hours will they be available on your wedding day?  These are all questions to consider when choosing and budgeting for your photographer.  You also will want to consider print releases and the photographer’s preferred method of ordering prints after the wedding.  This will help you not have any surprises post-wedding as well.
  4. The Photographer’s Logistics
    • Wedding planning has many logistics to think through and plan for on your big day.  Photographers also have several variables and logistics to consider.  Second shooters, food, travel, liability insurance, preferred vendors, etc. are all things that need to be considered when securing your photographer. This is where a wedding planner, like Knots ‘N Such, can help you think through logistics that you might not have thought through before and what questions to consider when building a contract with a photographer.

Pinning Like a Pro: Wedding Planning Pinterest Tips from Knots ‘N Such, Raleigh Wedding Planner and Florist

Pinterest is an amazing resource, and even I have to be careful, because it can become a black hole of time, sucking me in for way longer than I expected.  As a wedding planner, I love it as a resource to see into a bride’s mind and vision.  When meeting with a bride, I always ask to be a collaborator on their boards, whether public or private.  It helps me connect with them and give a visual clue to how they picture their big day.  Pinterest though is a massive resource and sometimes can be overwhelming for an already overwhelmed bride.  Knots ‘N Such, Raleigh Wedding Planner and Florist, is here today to provide my top 3 tips on how to pin like a pro and not become overwhelmed by the vast limits of Pinterest’s space.

  1. Be Inspired but Organized
    • The purpose of Pinterest is to be inspired.  It can help shape your vision, bring out your likes and dislikes, or even help with the color scheme. You are bound to find something for every part of your wedding-from save the dates to creative thank you notes.  The key is to use it for inspiration not replication of someone else’s wedding. Also, it is very easy to create a board of 1000 images, but that almost defeats the purpose, as you want to go back to the thing that inspired you, not get lost in a huge board of images.  You don’t want to lose your inspiration in the midst of clutter.  Pinterest also has added sub-boards in the main board to help you organize in categories, maybe “centerpieces” or “bouquets”. Organization will help you and your planner be inspired by what first inspired you.
  2. Set Realistic Expectations
    • With any type of social media, you need to go in realizing that you are viewing a highlight reel of someone’s life.  Pinterest is no exception.  I am sure we have all had a fail or two by something we tried to replicate from social media.  When searching through Pinterest images, keep your expectations in check.  What can be achieved?  What is within your budget?  Are those blooms in season for your wedding date?  If you go in with realistic expectations, then you will be a more satisfied bride on your big day.
  3. Leave Room for Personal Style
    • Just because you are using Pinterest as a resource for your big day does not mean it is the only resource for helping plan your wedding.  You can look elsewhere to help shape your big day. For instance, maybe you find an article that states what a trending color is for this wedding season but you want to incorporate your signature color into your wedding, don’t forgo your style just because someone else said so.  Don’t be limited in finding inspiration from other sources, like a wedding planner or a fashion blog.  It’s okay to log off for a while and find inspiration beyond the screen.

Summer Wedding: 9 Ways to Beat the Heat, Tips from Knots ‘N Such, Raleigh Wedding Planner and Florist

Guess what? It’s summer. And in case you haven’t stepped outside in the past few weeks (lucky you), in the Raleigh world that means it’s HOT, complete with that sticky, walking-through-water feel that only a North Carolina summer can bring.  Just wait until you step into all five layers of that gorgeous princess ball gown of a wedding dress!

Everyone loves summer weddings, including me, but in the heat of summer, doing anything outside can be tough and outdoor weddings that much more so. Here are a few things to think about to beat the heat on your big day.

  1. Avoid the heat

This one sounds obvious, but sometimes it’s an easy one to forget. If you know you’re going to get married on a hot day (read any time June thru August), try going for a later or earlier ceremony time to avoid the heat of the day. You may not be able to escape the temperatures for the whole event, but this way you at least won’t have guests sitting for the ceremony, baking in the hot sun at its peak.

  1. Attire

Especially with an outdoor ceremony, take extra time to consider what your wedding party will wear on the day of. Trade the full tux and jacket for a nice vest, bowtie, or suspenders to class up the guys’ outfits without adding undo layers. For the wedding dress, try to pick something light and loose.

  1. Hydrate!

I can’t stress this one enough. Especially if you’re wearing a traditional wedding dress, you are going to be hot, hot, hot. Both you and your new hubby will be up on your feet, bouncing from friend to family member and back again. It will be all you can do to get a bite to eat (a pet peeve of mine—please be sure to get food!), but in hot weather definitely do NOT skimp on water. And don’t pass on water right to the beer. Trust me, you’ll regret it later. This goes for your guests, as well. You know how much quicker a cold beer or glass of wine can go to your head on a hot day. Make sure to have cool, non-alcoholic drinks available—and some cocktail hour snacks wouldn’t hurt, either.

  1. Flowers

Your blooms won’t like the heat any more than you do—and they also need to hydrate. As soon as you can after the ceremony, plop those bouquets in a glass of water. Your florist should take care of the centerpieces or other floral pieces, but just in case have your planner keep on eye on them to maybe top them off with water before dinner if they begin to wilt. (Bonus if your coordinator is also your florist!) What flowers you choose can help save the day, as well.  In-season blooms that don’t have to travel far will last longer, and the hardier summer varieties will stand up to the warmth better than more fragile ones.

  1. Cake or other desserts

Icing also doesn’t hold up well in the heat. While the sweet treats will taste just as delicious with dripping frosting as not, they won’t make for the best pictures, and you’re bound to get extremely sticky if you go for a cake cutting. Have your baker deliver during cocktail hour, so the cake doesn’t stay out long before the cake cutting. You may even want to cut the cake before dinner, so the cake is at its freshest for the pictures.  And then guests don’t have to wait long for dessert.

  1. Protecting guests

If you plan on spending most of the day in the sun, help guests prepare! Have sunscreen available—in cute little baskets or bins—somewhere near the entrance so they can lather up when they get there. If you plan on using metal chairs for the ceremony, invest in covers so no one burns her bottom. Also try to scope out or create shady areas for people to escape, especially during the cocktail hour.

  1. Indoor options

Remember the heat takes the biggest toll on the old and the young. If you have grandparents making the trip, make sure there is somewhere for them to go sit and cool off. If there’s an indoor element to the venue—even if not big enough for the entire party—think about making it available for those who really need it. The same goes for small children.

  1. Think waterpark!

Maybe not quite that extreme, but if temperatures are really getting up there, it might not be a bad idea to get some fans and misters to go on the tent. I heard of a bride who had a fan underneath the head table to blow under her skirt and help her cool off! Or go with the amusement park theme and get everyone those little squirt bottle fans as favors. If the venue has a hose, hook a fan up to the water source and create your own cooling station. Any way that you have to help your guests cool off will go a long way.

  1. Have some fun

Use the heat as a way to introduce some more casual aspects to your wedding. Give your programs a second purpose by having them printed as fans, so your guests can fan themselves during the ceremony.  Have a late-night snack of popsicles (Lunapops, anyone?), and have frozen drinks at the bar.  Ask your caterer to be sure and bring double the amount of water so you don’t run out.

Take it from your Raleigh wedding planner, if you have an outdoor wedding in June, July, or August, your chances of having excessive heat are great.  So plan to pamper yourself and your guests to beat the heat!  Be creative, have fun, and stay safe!

Addressing Wedding Invitations: Tips from Knots ‘N Such, Raleigh Wedding Planner and Florist

An important part of wedding planning is addressing the invitations.  You’ve set the date. You’ve booked the venue.  Now it’s time to invite those guests. Here are some tips for wedding invites from Knots ‘N Such, Raleigh Wedding Planner and Florist.

  1. Timing is Important
    • You generally want to send out your invitations 8 weeks before the wedding.  This allows for RSVPs and any errors that may occur when sending out through the postal system.  Don’t underestimate the time it takes to address the envelopes. If you’re using a calligrapher, ask her how much time she’ll need based on guest count. Art takes time, so give her plenty. (For beautiful calligraphy services, check out www.theobliquepen.com.) For a less formal affair, you might choose to have the addresses printed, in which case you need to confirm the company you use provides that service (many online invitation companies do not). Or you might decide you’d be happy with simple stylish handwriting from a talented person. (For handwriting with flair, contact brich2222@gmail.com.) Still some of you might choose to hand write the addresses yourself. Be honest with your schedule to determine if this possible without causing unneeded stress. At all cost, do not pull an all nighter and do not send those invites out late because of poor planning!
  2. Etiquette for names
    • When building your guest list, know who you are inviting. What is his/her full name? Title? Significant other? Guest name? Children and their ages? All of these details will dictate how you address the envelope. So get this well in advance to save the stress of last minute phone calls/emails/texts. If you’re using a calligrapher and/or wedding planner, he/she will know the etiquette rules for addressing envelopes.
  3. Ask for the spelling!
    • Check, check, double check, triple check your spelling.  I recently managed RSVPs for a formal wedding and there was a guest named Debra. She RSVPd that she wouldn’t be attending, but included a note that her name is actually spelled Deborah. Spelling of names is a big deal seeing as how we live in a first world country.
  4. Get Excited
    • Once you send out these wedding invitations, the countdown to your wedding is on.  Get excited, because the big day is coming!

Writing Thank You Notes, Tips from Knots ‘N Such, Raleigh Wedding Planner & Florist

Even before you get married, it so important to go ahead and plan writing thank you notes. 1. Know the Timeline
For gifts received prior to the wedding, it is customary that you have two weeks to write and send the thank you note. Gifts received on or after the wedding, the timeline lengthens a bit to three months.

2. Have all the “Write” Materials
Pardon the pun there, but before you even receive the first gift, it’s so important to have all the materials you are going to need to write your notes. Save your guest list from wedding invitations to have handy when addressing thank you notes. Also go ahead and order your personalized stationery or stock up in stationery from your favorite paper source store. You may even have pre-wedding stationery and take a personalized thank you photo at the wedding to use for post-wedding gifts. Bulk order stamps (the ones that are already sticky-take it from me, they are a lifesaver and will save your tongue).

3. Set a Routine
It may help to have a comfortable writing station somewhere in your home. Turn on your favorite TV show or music. Enlist your significant other to write a certain number of notes a night. Make it a routine and knock them out little by little, so you’re not stuck with a large number to write at one time.

4. Pen a Personalized Note
Each note should have a personal touch that references the couples gratitude, the specific gift they have received, and how the gift and/or the giver have/will impact your life. Be specific with the gift, and in the case of cash, maybe highlight that you are saving for your first home or it will be a great benefit for the honeymoon. Hav “writer’s block”? Search for thank you note samples online to help spur writing and go from there.

Bar Tips From A Raleigh Wedding Planner

Open bar, cash bar, no bar… Alcoholic beverages can quickly become one of the most expensive components of your wedding planning, sometimes even rounding out to be more per-person than your food! Knots ‘N Such, Raleigh Wedding Planner, is here with some approaches to the wedding bar that you may want to consider before you write that check:

 

Open Bar

On the more expensive end, the open bar is the most popular choice for weddings. Many couples will often say things like “my family doesn’t really drink”, and while that may be true, there’s just no telling how people may react to the word “free”. The best way to tackle this is by selecting exactly what you would like served at your bar, only go top shelf on the really important drinks (i.e. dad’s favorite bourbon), and set specific hours of operation for the bar so your guests don’t get out of hand. You may even think about coming up with your “signature” drink and then rounding out the bar with more traditional offerings of just beer & wine.

Cash Bar

Less popular but a more budget friendly option: the cash bar. It can save you a lot of money in your budget, however, fair warning: many guests often come to a wedding expecting to drink, so the cash bar can be an unfavorable surprise for some. However, when given an appropriate heads up, many guests are fine with the idea, fully understand, and come prepared. Another alternative is giving your guests drink tickets to ensure everyone gets enough. You can even get customized tickets from a calligrapher with your new name and wedding date! (Note: The option of having a cash bar depends wholly on your bartender/caterer/venue and whether they are allowed to sell directly to your guests. Investigate early!)

Alcohol Free

Dry weddings, while rare, do occur more often than one would think. Besides the obvious financial reasons, it’s also a surefire way to know that all of your guests are getting home safely! However, a beverage list of only soft drinks can leave a party feeling a bit dull. Consider having specialty mocktails concocted and make a special drink list for your guests. You can personally design the names and have them passed around on trays for a fanciful feel! Side note: Adding edible blooms to your drinks is a personal fave of this florist. 😉

Always remember to serve some kind of food whenever you serve drinks, just to err on the side of caution. (Many bartenders require it.) Even if it’s just cocktail hour, have a tray of cheese and crackers available to get something in your guests stomach before they start to drink. That’s a start!
