Team Flower Workshop, Knots ‘N Such, Raleigh Wedding Planner and Florist

Last year, I had the opportunity to attend a Team Flower workshop in Boone, NC.  Kelley treated us to luxurious accommodation in a mountain-top cabin.  Designers from all over the southeast attended and what a pleasure it was to have such amazing support.  The first day we had an in-depth discussion of business practices, workflows, and pricing strategies.  The second and third day was spent doing hands-on design.  The beautiful blooms were provided by many local farms, including a fellow Chapel Designer and Team Flower member, Susan Wright of Shady Grove Gardens.  On the last day, Heather Payne Photography attended to take professional images of our work.  Shout out to Kelly from Team Flower who showered us with beautiful gifts, food, and education.  It was truly a delight, and I’m excited to share with you some of the images of my work done there.

A Raleigh Wedding/Event Planner Venue Spotlight: River Ridge Golf Club

Cover photo by Azul Photography. Knots ‘N Such is a Raleigh wedding planner & florist.

As a Raleigh Wedding/Event Planner, I know the importance of finding the perfect venue. The venue sets the tone, captures the theme, and frames the memories being made for any event. Each couple has a vision of their ideal wedding and finding the right space to make that dream a reality is very important. This week I would like to share a venue spotlight on River Ridge Golf Club located in Raleigh, NC. and an interview I did with Miranda E. Day, River Ridge’s Sales and Events Director. But first, mark your calendars for their open house on April 23rd from Noon – 3:00 PM. I’ll be there showing off some blooms to inspire you for your big day!

RRGC Open House - Raleigh Wedding Planner & Florist

Venue Location:

Surrounded by blue Carolina skies and sweeping green landscapes,  River Ridge Golf Club  is sure to offer an intimate stage for your love story and create memories that will last a lifetime.  When asked if River Ridge had both outdoor and indoor ceremony and reception sites available, Ms. Day commented, “River Ridge hosts both ceremonies and receptions. Typically, our events are outdoor only, but we can host events in our ballroom or ceremonies on our covered outdoor pavilion.” When asked about the maximum capacity, Ms. Day said, “Approximately 300 guests between our outdoor pavilion space and indoor ballroom or 215 located on our outdoor pavilion. We provide 150 chairs for reception and ceremony. Our ballroom is a gorgeous 10,000 square foot space. In the event of rain, if a couple chooses an outdoor ceremony, we can also accommodate a tent.” River Ridge is also ADA accessible with a ramp.

As a Raleigh Wedding/Event Planner and owner of Knots 'N Such Event Planning & Design, I understand how important finding the perfect venue is. River Ridge Golf Club offers a lovely outdoor space for ceremonies.

Beautiful outdoor ceremony at River Ridge Golf Club

Price of Venue:

When it comes to venue selection couples want to know how much a venue will cost and what is included in the fee. When asked this question, Miranda was very detailed and I just loved that. No couple wants hidden fees. Miranda shared with me that at River Ridge Golf Club, they do not charge a fee per guest. Instead, they base their charges on whether the couple is interested in the wedding ceremony only ($1200), a wedding reception only ($2800) or both ( $3200). Prices don’t vary based on day of the week or time. This is great for couples that wish to have a weekend wedding. Most locations charge more for a weekend date.

What’s Included:

When asked what the price included, Ms. Day commented, “Our rental fee includes the use of  the outdoor pavilion and indoor ballroom, use of our indoor clubhouse, ceremony chairs as well as reception tables and chairs for 150 guests, 48 hours use of storage space, access to a certified wedding planner to meet with you and discuss your visions of your special day, 10-hour day of event coordination from our events staff, flexibility to decorate our neutral space to reflect your personal taste, complimentary one hour for rehearsal, and complimentary use of venue for bridal portraits before your event. Staff will also help transition from ceremony to reception.”

As a Raleigh Wedding/Event Planner and owner of Knots 'N Such Event Planning & Design, I understand how important finding the perfect venue is. River Ridge Golf Club offers a beautiful reception area.

River Ridge Reception

The fee also includes the use of (15) 72” round tables that can accommodate up to 10 guests each, (150) white resin reception chairs, (150) white ceremony chairs, (10) 8 ft. banquet tables, (5) 30” tall cocktail tables,(1) 36” round cake table, (1) 48” sweetheart table for bride and groom,  and (2) 6′ banquet tables. There is no additional charges for water, electrical, or parking. Parking is ample and there is no need to rent additional rest rooms.

Set Up and Decoration:

At River Ridge Golf Club, you can be in the venue at 7:00 am if you’d like to get ready onsite. Club staff will arrive between 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm. If you would like staff to be on the premise early to help with additional setup, there is an additional fee. All tables and chairs will be setup the day before so your vendor setup can begin at 7:00 am.

When asked if there are there restrictions to the space with decorating, Ms. Day replied,”Our elegant neutral spaces can be decorated with your personal style any way you like. However, you will want to have centerpieces with a heavy base because the pavilion is elevated and there is always a slight breeze blowing through. Candles should be sheltered from the wind as well. Also, we ask that you do not put holes into walls and ceilings and use command hooks instead.” Occasionally, River Ridge will host multiple weddings on the same weekend. It can affect tent rental pick up and drop off but it will not affect rehearsal. Staff will coordinate these times.

Catering:

River Ridge Golf Club does not have an in-house caterer. They do, however, have a preferred vendor and caterer list you can choose from. If a couple prefers to use someone outside of that list… it is welcomed as long as the caterer or vendor is approved by Miranda. There is no fee for using your own vendors.  The next questions are always asked by couples.  What is the alcohol policy? And what kind of bar options are offered? Miranda is happy to provide insight. River Ridge has both Beer & Wine Licenses and all beer and wine must be purchased through the Club. There are several options for you to choose from that will suit your personal preference best and accommodate your budget.

As a Raleigh Wedding/Event Planner and owner of Knots 'N Such Event Planning & Design, I understand how important finding the perfect venue is. River Ridge Golf Club offers beautiful landscapes for breathtaking photography.

Enchanting Photography possibilities at River Ridge

Open Bar:

With our open bar option, we invoice based on consumption. While other venues charge per person, we charge per drink, so clients only pay for what is used. The prices listed below are the fees for the open bar option:

  • $3.00/ domestic beer
  • $4.00/ import beer
  • $4.00/specialty beer
  • $5.00/ glass of wine
  • $20 per hour for bartender fee + hour clean up/set up
  • 20% gratuity added to all beverages sold

*According to the NC Consumer Tax Law, there will be an Alcoholic Beverage Tax charged for all beer and wine consumed.

Open Bar with Limits:

If you choose to forego the open bar option, you have the choice to control consumption and spending by setting a monetary limit or by using a ticket system.

  •  Monetary Limit: Set a limit for how much you want to spend on alcohol at your event. *This set price does not include tax, bartender fee or gratuity.
  •  Ticket System: The preferred and equitable option of the two, open bar with ticket limit ensures that every guest can enjoy complimentary drinks, without breaking your budget. Each guest is allotted a certain number of tickets at your discretion (usually attached to the programs or name cards) When guests have used all their allotted tickets, they can purchase alcohol from the bar with cash.*This set price does not include tax, bartender fee or gratuity.

Cash Bar:

Our cash bar option is great for couples on a budget. Your guest will pay for their own drinks. The only charge you are responsible for is the bartender fee, which is $20/hour + clean up/set up.

Liquor Bar:

Liquor is an option! You must obtain a 24-hour special occasional alcohol permit from ABC. Once you are granted your permit, you will be allowed to bring in your own liquor and mixers and our bartenders will make the drinks for your guests. There is an additional corkage fee of $3 per person that will be added to your final invoice.

As a Raleigh Wedding/Event Planner and owner of Knots 'N Such Event Planning & Design, I understand how important finding the perfect venue is. River Ridge Golf Club offers wonderful space for entertaining.

Entertaining spaces at River Ridge

Entertainment:

Next Ms. Day and I discussed entertainment… after all…what’s a wedding and reception without music? Bands or DJs are welcome and must provide their own equipment. All noise and guests must be packed up and out of the venue by 11:00 pm. to respect noise ordinances. Miranda added that there are no photo or video restrictions or fees, but guest are at their own risk on the golf course.

Miranda Day is  your point of contact at River Ridge Golf Club; She will be there for the 10-hours of day-of coordination. Accommodating and friendly, you’ll love working with her! I’m very excited to provide floral decor for their clients! For more information or to view the River Ridge Golf Club gallery click here .

2015 in Review! – Raleigh Wedding Planner & Florist

Knots ‘N Such is a Raleigh wedding planner & florist. Feature photo by Casey Rose Photography.

2016 —woo hoo! I’ve hit the ground running! And I’m confident this is going to be the best year yet for KNS!

But before we jump ahead, I want to reflect on 2015. It was a great year in so many ways.

But first, my efforts in this industry couldn’t have been successful without the help of so many people. My family has been beyond supportive—my husband and two little girls – I live for you! Caterers, photographers, videographers, DJs – my army! None of us can do it alone and are so dependent on each other for success. And of course my wonderful couples. You all make each day, every hectic phone call, all the late nights and last-minute changes worth every minute. I can’t thank you enough!

For a peek into my year, here’s my top 10 moments of 2015:

  1. January NACE meeting

The National Association of Catering and Events holds a networking event each month for event vendors—planners, florists, photographers, DJs, caterers, the list goes on. Last year, they had a different planner organize and design each meeting so we could showcase our work.

On an icy night in January, I along with other great vendors, worked hard to create a memorable event for some of our favorite industry friends. I particularly enjoyed designing this event for several reasons. First, it was held in All Saints Chapel in downtown Raleigh, so I had a beautiful canvas! I was ecstatic with how my centerpieces turned out – they are still at the top of my list of favorite designs! So many people approached me to compliment my work, it made me teary-eyed! As a fairly new planner and florist, it was like a dream to be able to introduce my work into such an amazing group of people and have them appreciate it!

  1. My first WOW piece of 2015

I offer to do a WOW piece for all of my floral clients – it’s my favorite piece for a wedding. Depending on their budget, they may or may not include one in their design plan. So I was over the moon that my first floral client of the year wanted one! What a way to start off the season! Ashley and Mark’s March wedding at Castle McCulloch’s Crystal Garden was immaculate. They had a gorgeous deep purple and white color scheme – and the bride had to have bling! Together, we came up with a combination of blooms and decor that we placed on her guest book table. So it was the first thing guests saw as they entered the reception. I also coordinated the wedding, so was able to enjoy the piece all evening long! 🙂

  1. My first open house at Barn at Valhalla

This was the start of a beautiful relationship with the manager, Barbara, and owners, Dillon & Carley. Barb and I hit off immediately upon meeting and just enjoy working with each other so much. We share a deep commitment to making sure our clients have an amazing event. I helped her plan and design both open houses last year, and they went beautifully. Both she and Dillon are just such wonderful people, and the Barn at Valhalla is by far my favorite rustic venue.

  1. Happiest couple when announced husband and wife

Katie and Ryan, my first official Hillsborough couple, were married in April. Every couple is happy when announced as husband and wife, but these two were just magical. I’ve never seen such joy like I saw on their faces and in their body language – Katie came out nearly dancing and hugging everyone in sight. It brought tears to my eyes! And these two are amazingly sweet, so deserve every bit of that joy!

  1. Playing MC

If you’re a regular KNS blog reader, you know how much I love Yvonne & Cash, one of my May clients. We laughed ourselves silly every time we talked! They’re loads of fun and their wedding was no different. One moment that will forever be imprinted on my mind is their grand introduction into the reception. Their DJ was shy, so a friend was doing the announcements. Either the music was too loud or she was too quiet, but no one could hear the bride and groom be announced. As a good wedding planner, I could see some  intervention was needed. I raced to the mic and belted out “Let’s give it up for the new Mr. and Mrs. Cash!” And the crowd went wild. LOL While I had fun playing MC, I now confirm much in advance that the hired DJ will also MC. 😉

  1. Site visit to Duke Gardens

Lauren and Mike said I do in May at Duke Gardens, so I went for a venue walk-through a month earlier. The Gardens were beautiful in May, but April blew me away. It was like paradise! I’d been there so many times before, but never in April. Now I plan to visit every April, wedding or not, to drink in all that beauty.

  1. Moonlight Magnolia photo shoot

It’s always an honor to be asked by other professionals in the industry to design for them. Moonlight Magnolia is a vintage rental company with china and other decor items. She was building a new website this year, and she asked me to do the flowers. I was so happy to be able to help show off her beautiful inventory!

  1. A full dance floor for the song “Under the Sea” from The Little Mermaid – What?!

Kristen is American and Fanon is from Trinidad—and their big day in May was the first time their families had met! When the music started, it was just incredible the way they all came together on the dance floor. I mean, everybody. There wasn’t anybody sitting at the tables. When Kristen’s aunt approached and said, “You have to play ‘Under the Sea’ the DJ and I thought, “Wow, this could go so badly”. But we were so wrong! The crowd went wild! It was just incredible to see families from such different backgrounds come together.  If only the whole world could dance it out to a fun song. 🙂

  1. Seeing my name in lights

Most wedding vendors know how important it is to get as much publicity as possible. Free publicity goes much farther than paid advertising at times! One of my goals for 2015 was to become known as a wedding planner & florist in my li’l town of Hillsborough. So when I won the Couples’ Choice award from WeddingWire, I took the opportunity to send the press release to the local paper, The News of Orange County. I was so appreciative that they took it one step further by interviewing me and featuring KNS in their business section. I love small towns. 🙂

The first time KNS was nationally acknowledged was on The Knot. Jessica Arden Photography submitted a wedding we did together and it was accepted! It was such a nice surprise for me! Finally, my year wrapped up with a styled shoot featured on the national wedding blog, Artfully Wed. It’s a gorgeous blog and I was so honored our shoot was featured!

  1. Becoming a Chapel Designer

Holly Chapple created the Chapel Designers. See what she did there? Clever, right?! This strong lady is not only clever but incredibly talented and gifted. She’s been growing and designing flowers for over 20 years. And she is internationally recognized as one of the best. She travels around the globe holding workshops to teach her techniques – and I wanted in on one! I couldn’t wait for her to make it back to DC for a workshop, so I could easily attend.

I’ve been following her for quite a while on social media and my current obsession, Instagram. IG is a florist paradise you guys, but I digress.  One day I was looking through Holly’s feed liking nearly every one of her posts, and that must have caught her attention. She started following me on Instagram. Me? Little ol’ me?! I totally flipped out, of course. LOL It was then that I knew I had to make my dream a reality – I had to become a Chapel Designer!

So I said it out loud – yep, when I say something out loud, it makes me bound and determined to make it happen. Much to the amazement of those around me, I’ve never been one to say “Someday I’ll do this…” and never do it. If it comes out of my mouth, I find a way to accomplish it. Over the summer, Holly offered a workshop at her new flower farm, Hope. I jumped on the opportunity to sign up! I had to pass an “inspection” to make sure I qualified. How nerve wracking is that?! haha

The workshop was amazing. Ariel Dearie, a NYC designer, joined us to teach a class on centerpiece and bouquet design. Holly taught us techniques that are new to the floral industry, invented by her! I told you this lady is amazing. And at the end, as I walked away glowing and in awe, I joined the Chapel Designers. This group of international designers talk every day – we laugh, we complain, we share, we teach, we inspire. And Holly and her team do all they can to market each and every one of us through social media and the web.

Jody Miller Photography

So I could go on and on about that 2015 highlight – literally the best of the year – but I’ll stop now. In March, I’ll be attending the annual Chapel Designers workshop in NYC, so I’ll talk your ear off again on this subject in a couple of months. 😉

2016, I’m ready. Bring it!

Meredith & Trey – Raleigh Wedding Planner & Florist

Remember back in June, we here in NC thought we would literally melt from the heat wave?  That was the setting for a lovely summer outdoor wedding for us.  We persevered and stood strong in 100+ degree heat, not wanting to let our clients down at all!  (When really we wanted to jump into the pond at the venue!  LOL)

Knots ‘N Such, Raleigh wedding planner & florist, joined the planning process a few months prior and carefully reviewed existing plans and helped to fill in the gaps, so that the day went amazingly smooth and nothing was forgotten.  But we can’t plan for Mother Nature! Just as the sun went down and the reception was in full swing, She threw another curve ball.  Enter dark clouds, thunder, lightning, and huge gusts of wind.  We were sure we were gonna be drenched!  The bride asked to move up the tosses and sparkler exit, so we hurried through those, and thought we had just made it in time.  Packing up was pure chaos as everyone still present packed and loaded in a frenzy.  But guess what?  It never rained.

I have to laugh looking back.  This wedding was sweet and wonderful, but probably the craziest experience I’ve encountered yet.  It also illustrated how Knots ‘N Such can persevere in any type of environment!  I’m so thankful for my assistant coordinator, Amy, for hanging in there with me.  And I’m thankful for the other vendors, those who cooperated to make the day magical for the couple.

Raleigh Wedding Planner & Florist

I also want to note the lovely flowers; I had so  much fun designing these unique pieces for the wedding. The bride’s favorite color is purple, but she couldn’t choose just one shade.  Soooo, we used all shades of purple!  The venue  has hanging baskets of fern and rose bushes all around the property, so we used fern and roses in all the arrangements as well.  Spring was the purple wedding season for me, but each wedding was so different in blooms and style, so I never got bored, even at this last purple wedding.  I’m always so inspired by each couple and strive to design something truly unique for them.

I could ramble all day about how much I enjoy my job and how much I hope to please my beautiful couples, but I must sign off for today!  See the full gallery here.

Knots ‘N Such has been honored twice recently by being featured on local and national websites. First, in an effort to spread my name and services locally, I reached out to the town newspaper, News of Orange. I had just won the Couples’ Choice award from Wedding Wire and my floral design business was starting to take off, so I wanted all my neighbors to know about me. My goal is to work more here in my li’l ol’ Hillsborough! I’m  not just a Raleigh wedding planner!  🙂  I was ecstatic when the paper asked to interview me and publish it in their business section! Check it out here.

Also, I woke up one morning with an email from The Knot in my inbox.  Jessica Arden Photography had one of our Durham weddings published!  I did month of coordination and reception decor styling for this one.  Everyone did such a fantastic job – I couldn’t have asked for a better family and better team of vendors!  You can see the wedding gallery on my website here. And you can read the blog on The Knot here.
